Why Pray the Stations of the Cross?

In the early days of the Church, pious Christians would revisit the actual places where Jesus suffered when He carried His cross to Calvary on the first Good Friday.  Mourning Our Lord, they would sing, pray and meditate along the sorrowful path.  Some say that our Blessed Mother herself originated this devotion which became known as “making the stations”.

The devotion consists of moving between 14 stations which represent particular events in the Passion and Death of Our Lord.  You, too, can make a sort of pilgrimage as you visit these places in spirit each time you pray the Way of the Cross.

You can gain many indulgences by praying the stations, especially for the souls in Purgatory.  Console Our Lord by making the Stations of the Cross Often and you will soon find that “in the cross is sweetness; in the cross is strength; in the cross is joy”.

Current Rules of Lenten Fast and Abstinence for Children

If you are over 14 years old, you may not eat meat on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent.  The law does not oblige you to fast (which is for adults), but you should make some sacrifices concerning food during Lent.

If you are under 14 years old, you have neither to fast nor abstain.  However, you should try to make some sacrifices concerning food during Lent.

Traditional Rules of Lenten Fast and Abstinence for Children

A Youth’s Lenten Pledge

My crucified Jesus, my God and Savior, help me to make a good Lent, root out my sins, and live in union with Thee.  with thy help, I pledge and resolve the following Lenten efforts:

 1.  I will do penance for my sins, and make special sacrifices for Thee.

 2.  I will pray more often, more attentively, more humbly

 3.  I will bend my will to Thine, by obeying Thy Commandments and my superiors.

 4.  I will give up certain things I like, to better strengthen my will against occasions of sin.

 5.  I will more strictly avoid occasions of sin.

 6.  I will control and discipline my eyes, my imagination and my curiosity.

 7.  I will regard Lent as a time of war against my sins and weaknesses; a time to root out bad habits and self-love.

 8.  I will also use Lent as a time to grow in virtue, in Thy love, in peace.

 9.  I will often think of Thee crucified for my sins, and try to have true contrition and purpose of amendment.

10.  I will be cheerful amidst my penances and efforts, without becoming a cross or burden to others.
